Anne and Regina Furphy has opened Gourmetibles, a gourmet snack shop, at 494 Main Street. You may have noticed Gourmetibles' salty-sweet "candy that thinks it's a cookie" treats for sale at Hudson Valley shops but visit the Beacon headquarters for goodies, gifts, and tastings.

The state of emergency has been lifted.

Power is still being restored after many residents andwere without power for many days. Schools reopened on Tuesday.

Snow Emergency

A SNOW EMERGENCY is hereby declared in the City of Beacon effective Wednesday, February 24, 2010 at 8:00pm.

Heavy snow and significant snow accumulation is expected. The snow emergency is in effect until further notice. All motor vehicles shall be removed from all streets and highways no later than 8:00pm tonight, February 24, 2010.

Transit Oriented Development (TOD) Update

Update on 10 February 2010:
The City Council met with the Main Street Corridor Committee and Beacon Deserves Better Committee on Dec 10, 2010. Also in attendance were City Administrator Meredith Robson, the City Planner David Stolman and County Planner John Clarke. The proposed Transit Oriented Development (TOD) zoning district is an important issue before the Beacon City Council and all Beacon citizens. Please review the TOD resources page for details.

New Kayak Center Funded

New York State Environmental Protection Fund’s Local Waterfront Revitalization Program announced $693,070 in funding for the development of 12 “eco-docks,” which will provide improved access for non-motorized boats in the Hudson River and Lake Champlain. The awards will serve as legacy projects of the Hudson-Fulton-Champlain Quadricentennial celebration.

A $150,000 grant will enable the City of Beacon, in partnership with environmental organization Scenic Hudson, to build a kayak deck at Long Dock Beacon as part of a kayak center.

Student Government

Their city council votes may be non-binding, but students, who are members of youth groups like the Boy and Girl Scouts, school student government body, Explorer program, and others, may now serve on the Beacon City Council.

“We want our youth to make the connection that local government impacts their lives and to understand that they have a voice in shaping their future, if they get involved,” said Mayor Steven Gold.

Chosen students will have a seat at the table at a city council workshop and regular meeting, receive publicly distributed materials the council reviews, and have an equal voice in discussions. They will even have a vote – albeit non-binding.

The first group to participate in the program is the Venture Crew 203, part of the Boy Scouts and sponsored by the American Legion Post 203 in Beacon.

AARP Tax-Aide is offering free tax help in Beacon through April 15. The free, volunteer-run tax preparation service is available to middle- and low-income taxpayers, with special consideration to those age 60 and older.

AARP Tax-Aide counselors will be at two sites in Beacon:

► Thursdays :: 10am to 1pm

Southern Dutchess Community Action Agency, 554 Main Street

Banner Project :: Call for Artists

After a two-year run, the first Beacon Artist Banners have been retired. The 13 foot tall banners are displayed May-October on lampposts along Beekman Street leading up from the train station to Main Street.

Artist interested in being considered for inclusion in the next two-year installation can email an inquiry to Carla Goldberg and Stacey Ward Kelly. Simple qualification requirements and submission details can be found on The Beekman Street Artist Banners Open Call for Artists.

Deadline for inquiries is February 19, 2010.
