Office of Emergency Management
Statement on Nor’ Eastern Storm Nemo and State of Emergency
February 8, 2013: 6:00 pm
BEACON, NY- As Nor’ Eastern Storm Nemo continues to strengthen, the City ofBeacon Office of Emergency Management is urging all residents to stay in their homes and shelter in place. This storm is capable of producing sustained winds of 10-20miles per hour with gusts in excess of 40 miles per hour along with wind driven snow.Snowfall rates may be in excess of 1-2 inches an hour.
Due to the high winds, excessive snowfall amounts and the possibility of large scale power outages, effective at 8:00 pm tonight Randy Casale, Mayor of the City of Beacon, has declared a State of Emergency until 10:00 am tomorrow (2/9) morning. We need all vehicles to be moved off the city streets to insure that plow trucks and emergency vehicles can get through. Further we ask that all residents stay in the safety of their homes until the storm passes. City of Beacon Emergency Officials are monitoring the situation closely and are prepared to respond. This storm has the potential to produce high winds and when coupled with snowfall amounts in excess of 12-18 inches, trees and limbs are likely to fall taking down power lines with them and resulting in power outages.
City of Beacon Emergency Officials have been contacted by Central Hudson andCentral Hudson has assured us they are actively prepared for the storm response.
Please remember that in the event you find wires down, DO NOT APPROACH ORTOUCH the wires. Keep at least 30 feet away and dial 911.
The City of Beacon Office of Emergency Management has an information line and can be reached at (845) 838-5081 for any updates. This line is for information only! In the event of an emergency, please dial 911. You may also get updates on channel 22 and the web at www.cityofbeacon.org. The Emergency Management staff will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available and necessary.
