The Highway Department maintains our city streets and parks, and manages curbside trash collection.
In winter, the department keeps 59 miles of road clear for emergency traffic—and collects Christmas trees after the holidays, too. In summer, the department waters roadside flowers and mows the grass on all city properties. Spring and fall, the department trims the trees and collects bagged leaves left curbside.
To keep the roads in good repair the department patches with hot blacktop mix; clears, inspects, and repairs over 800 storm basins; and installs and repairs street signs and poles. The work of maintaining the roads entails attention to details: removing dead animals from city streets, acting as school crossing guards, and even decking the city in holiday lights.
